Le masque de Camille

Exhibitions From 28 September 2023 to 14 January 2024

For her exhibition at ELEVEN STEENS, Camille Dufour will be finalising her installation, Après nous le déluge, in the form of a performance that displaces her studio practice into the space and temporality of the exhibition.

For her drawings and engravings, Camille Dufour uses heavy oak boards two metres long as a matrix. Once inked, they are forcefully applied to large sheets of paper. In this very physical work, Camille exhausts herself as much as she exhausts the ink on the paper. Suspended from the ceiling by a single point, the sheets roll up delicately to form cones, revealing a front and a back of what she has engraved: ecological, memorial, political imprints. "Après nous le déluge" highlights the urgent threats to biodiversity in the era of the Anthropocene. Colourful flower petals crush against the whiteness of the supports, creating a gigantic, vibrant herbarium. On the other side, drawings of endangered animal species slowly disappear from leaf to leaf. As with the Bayeux Tapestry, our movements through the installation inscribe the work in the temporality of our bodies, linking us to the history of this ecosystem. This monumental fresco, unfurled before us, builds a memory of living things and calls on us to take individual and collective responsibility.
